Fresh Air and What?
AUGUST 2, 2010

When it was time to think of a name for my blog, the phrase “fresh air and porridge” swam up from the recesses of my mind. It comes from the All Creatures Great and Small books by James Herriot – you might remember them from the public television series by the same name – and it captures the essence of what I want to share with you: simple things that help our family thrive.
Not that life for us is rosier than for everyone else; I’ve got all kinds of stories (and pictures) about the disasters, the challenges and the laugh-so-I-won’t-cry moments. You won’t be disappointed on that front!
Most of the things I’ll blog about revolve around cooking, raising children, connecting with nature and achieving good health – all of which I’ve been interested in since college and yet was sheepish to admit were my passions because I’m not “using my degree” to start a business venture, get a job outside the home, or write a bestselling book.
But when you discover something that really solves a problem, helps a child, tastes delicious, or stirs your soul, don’t you feel like shouting it from the rooftops? To me, these are the things that make life worth living, and without them, none of the possibilities I could accomplish with that degree would matter very much to me. And as it turns out, composing my thoughts into readable form for you here isn’t so different from all of those papers I wrote as a history and literature major after all…
My search for all things “Fresh Air and Porridge” is far from over, and I’m really looking forward to learning about what helps you thrive too. Stay tuned for more about ways to show and tell your stories of life well-lived!

As always my Sweet Rebecca.. I LOVE the way you express yourself. And.. you most assured ARE “using your degree”… just not in the ‘usual’ business ventures kind of way… you are doing something even MORE important…tapping into YOUR Joy .. and lovingly SHARING that Joy with others!
