Begin It

or dream you can,
Begin it.

Welcome to Fresh Air and Porridge!

Here we are at the foot of my Blogging Mountain, and as I write the first posts and figure out how to show and tell you all that I want to share, this Mary Engelbreit card that I’ve had since high school graduation in 1989 captures the feeling so perfectly.

Begin It

Something about the way she’s outfitted to the hilt with gear and still hasn’t taken that first step strikes such a chord with me!

And the look on her face is priceless:

Begin It Illo

I have been equipped with a beautiful new site (thanks to the incomparable Heather Sanders), guided in the art and craft of blogging by so many inspiring folks, and encouraged by family and friends to take the plunge. But now it’s all up to me.

Figuring out how to express what I want to share with you and putting things in place to make it happen took longer than I had anticipated. Many’s the time when the baby was crying and the house was a mess and the nurse called from school to say that one of my children had a headache that I wasn’t so sure I could pull this off and still be a good mother and wife and human being!

But ultimately, Fresh Air and Porridge is about finding ways to create joy and well-being out of whatever life brings. And we all know that if you wait until everything is perfect, you just might lose a wonderful opportunity. So here goes…

Thank you for joining me on the climb! Let me know how I’m doing, and how things are going for you too!

I know you’ve waited a good while to see this come to fruition, so I’m very excited you like it so much. I look forward to seeing what it’ll become with your “voice” in it. :)

can you believe that i was given this very card in the very same year??
1989, just after my freshman year at vanderbilt, and just before i left for my fall sememster in the rockies with NOLS. don’t know if i still have it, but i, too, framed it & hung it on the wall.
i was taking a leap of faith by not returning to college, but following a dream (with all the hiking gear). my friend’s mother seemed to understand that i wasn’t just NOT going back to school, but pursuing something different & exciting – i was touched.
such a simple & true quote to help us overcome our own personal inertia.
    step one!
    i’m with you, dear friend!

places to go

Who Are We, Anyway? So who are the Dawsons, and why would you be interested? Well, we are a family of 5 from Massachusetts. We just went on vacation in New Hampshire, so this is pretty much what we look like right now! Our oldest girl is 11 and just about to enter middle school; our son is 9 and going into 4th grade; and our baby girl is 21 months old, going on about five. We do a lot of things that some (including our children) might consider outdated, unconventional, or just plain weird.

Fresh Air and What? When it was time to think of a name for my blog, the phrase “fresh air and porridge” swam up from the recesses of my mind. It comes from the All Creatures Great and Small books by James Herriot - you might remember them from the public television series by the same name - and it captures the essence of what I want to share with you: simple things that help our family thrive.

Begin It Here we are at the foot of my Blogging Mountain, and as I write the first posts and figure out how to show and tell you all that I want to share, this Mary Engelbreit card that I’ve had since high school graduation in 1989 captures the feeling so perfectly.
